Split toned cyanotypes.
The accompanying photo of a cyanotype print shows the possibility of split toning. The foreground is yellow-pink whereas the sea and sky have remained cyanotype blue. How did I do it?
I developed a normal cyanotype and then after it had partially dried I toned it for one hour in a solution of .016% solution of Gallic acid with the pH adjusted to 9. This toned the entire print a grey-yellow-pink color which upon drying became the color you see in the photo. After the print had dried I carefully brushed acetic acid (2%) unto the sky and sea - returning them to their native blue. I again let the print dry and then I finished it with lavender oil mixed into beeswax.
The print now lives with a friend I have made on the foto app, one whom I hope to someday meet in person.
